A Buyer’s Guide to Dell Laptops
Find the Model That Works for You

While you can refer to all of them as a “Dell laptop”, the many different series of systems made by Dell all have unique designs and intended purposes. From everyday office work to 3D work to gaming (yes, Dell even makes non-Alienware gaming machines) the variety of laptops Dell offers is vast enough to be confusing.

Fortunately, each model name has an intended purpose and common design elements that can help you decide if they’re right for you. So we’d like to explain some of the more common types of Dell laptops you might see, so you can know what you’re looking for.

Starting with the more business oriented systems, the latitudes are the black suit and tie of the office - sensible, hard working and practical. A medium size, reasonable selection of ports and business oriented security options make these systems perfect for use in-office and on the go.

Featuring reasonably powerful processors while abstaining from dedicated GPUs or high resolution screens, Latitudes aim themselves at those performing everyday tasks who don’t want distractions from their system. IT admins may enjoy them for their remote management and security card support, while anyone assigned a Latitude is likely in good hands.

Latitudes are:

  • Aimed at businesses
  • Reliably performant
  • Comfortably portable

The heavyweights of Dell’s lineup, Precisions are the systems with dedicated graphics, high RAM and storage capacity, and the size to hold them. Boasting some of Dell’s bigger screens, the Precisions are less interested in being used on the go and more interested in being powerful machines that can be moved when needed.

With up to Xeon CPUs and Quadro GPUs, the performance offered by the Precisions is far above what’s needed for standard office work. Instead they’re aimed at workloads such as 3D CAD, professional video editing and other work that demands more from your system. All of the additional performance results in the machines being some of the heaviest, making them less comfortable to use on a lap or in a moving vehicle. If a Desktop PC isn’t manageable, Precisions are a good compromise between high power and portability.

Precisions have:

  • Lots of processing power
  • Big displays
  • Plenty of ports

Premium in both design and price. The XPS series has options for dedicated graphics, high resolution displays, and the high performance CPUs of other systems, all in a small, sleek design. Thin, light, and feature rich, an XPS is highly portable and versatile in its usage.

Perhaps the only limitation of the XPS are their lack of ports - usually limited to a handful of USB-C. This can of course be remedied with docks and adapters, which is a luxury that the lower definition built-in screens and lack of dedicated graphics of other laptops can’t remedy. An XPS is a great choice for a variety of work and recreational uses, or simply for anyone wanting a smaller laptop.

XPS have:

  • Thin & light builds
  • High quality displays
  • Support for dedicated graphics

Inspiron systems position themselves as a more budget friendly option, being one of the cheapest options Dell offers. In compensation, the systems aren’t as fully featured compared to other systems, lacking business features such as lock slots or security card readers.

Having modest specs, Inspirons won’t be doing any heavy 3D work, but are more than capable of handling everyday office work and file management. General browsing, streaming and light browser games should all be reasonable for an Inspiron; more than enough for anyone who doesn’t have a demanding use case.

Inspiron are:

  • Affordable
  • Comfortably portable
  • Straightforward

For gamers who want the ultimate performance, Dell's Alienware series offers top-tier gaming machines with eye-catching designs, powerful hardware, and the ability to run the most demanding titles. Alienware laptops are known for their customizable RGB lighting, advanced cooling systems, and high refresh rate screens, delivering smooth, immersive gaming experiences.

Built with powerful CPUs and top-of-the-line GPUs like the NVIDIA GeForce RTX series, Alienware laptops are capable of handling everything from AAA games to intensive creative applications such as video editing and 3D rendering. Despite their premium pricing, Alienware is synonymous with high-end gaming and performance. These laptops are bulkier than others due to their powerful components, but they offer the closest experience to desktop-level gaming in a portable form factor.

Alienware laptops feature:

  • High-performance gaming hardware
  • Customizable RGB lighting
  • Advanced cooling systems

While Dell is known for its more premium Alienware series of gaming machines, the G Series is a suite of entry level gaming laptops. Featuring high refresh rate screens and very capable specs, making them worthwhile options for both gaming and light content creation.

While the G Series can lack a premium feel, the compromise keeps the systems in an affordable range, while still being powerful enough to run games. While aimed at gaming, the refresh rate screens are great for general browsing, and a combination of powerful processor and dedicated GPU means the systems are great all rounders to do light work in any most workloads. Anyone looking to get a little bit more out of their computer could consider the higher specs of a G Series system.

G Series have:

  • Great hardware for games and other workloads
  • High refresh rate screens
  • Lower prices than Alienware

Dell Chromebooks are built with simplicity and ease of use in mind, making them perfect for education, light productivity, and everyday browsing. Running on Google’s Chrome OS, they come with access to a variety of web-based apps via the Chrome Web Store and support for Android apps through the Google Play Store. Chromebooks are known for their affordability, fast boot times, and cloud-based storage options, which make them ideal for those who work primarily online.

Though not designed for intensive tasks such as 3D rendering or high-end gaming, Dell’s Chromebooks can handle general productivity tasks like word processing, video streaming, and web browsing with ease. Lightweight and highly portable, they are especially suitable for students or anyone needing an inexpensive, no-fuss laptop that works quickly out of the box.

Chromebooks are:

  • Budget-friendly
  • Easy to use
